'ভীষ্ম সাহানী' ভারতীয় সাহিত্য-সংস্কৃতির জগতে একটি ব্যতিক্রমী বিশিষ্ট নাম। শোভন চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের অনুবাদে তাঁর লেখা একটি অসাধারণ গল্পের ভিত্তিতে তৈরী হয় প্রযোজনা 'নকশী কাঁথা'।
কর্মক্ষেত্রে পদোন্নতি এবং আরও বেশি রোজগারের পেছনে ছোটা দম্পতির সংসারে তাদের মা কিভাবে ব্রাত্য হয়ে যান, কিভাবে তাঁর উপস্তিতি রূপান্তরিত হয় একটি পুরনো আসবাবের মত, যার এই সংসারে হয়তো দেওয়ার মত আর কিছুই অবশিষ্ট নেই, যাকে যেকোনো সময় ফেলে দেওয়া যায় ওই আঁস্তাকুড়ের জঙ্গলে। অথচ সে কিন্তু আদতে ফুরোয়নি, এখনও দেওয়ার মতো তার অনেক কিছু আছে এই সংসারে।
কেরিয়ার সর্বস্ব উচ্চাকাঙ্খী আজকের প্রজন্ম, আকাঙ্খার নেশায় ভুলতে চায় তার অতীতকে, অস্বীকার করতে চায় তার মহত্ব, ছিঁড়তে চায় তার শিকড়। তাই মার্কিন কোম্পানীতে উচ্চপদে কর্মরত শ্যামাপ্রসাদ ওরফে শামু তার মার্কিন বসকে বাড়িতে ডিনারে নিমন্ত্রণ জানিয়ে পড়ে মহা ফাঁপরে। কোথায় লুকোবে তার অশিক্ষিত, অর্বাচীন, গেঁয়ো মা-কে? আশ্চর্য! সেই সনাতন-পুরাতন মা-ই তার সরলতা, গ্রাম্য-সংস্কৃতি, এবং শিল্পগুণ দিয়ে সাহেবকে উচ্ছসিত, উদ্বেলিত করে। তাঁর অসুস্থ, শীর্ণ কাঁপা হাতে বোনা একখানা নকশি কাঁথা, শামুকে পদোন্নতির লড়াইয়ে জিতিয়ে দেয়। নাট্যে এই প্রশ্নই উঠে আসে প্রকৃত বিজয়ী কে? প্রযোজনাটি আজকের প্রজন্মকে নিশ্চিতভাবে এই প্রশ্নের সামনে দাঁড় করায়।
Bhishma Sahni is a distinctive and eminent name in the world of Indian literature and culture. Based on one of his remarkable short stories, translated by Shobhan Chattopadhyay, the production “Nakshi Kantha” was created.
In a household where a couple relentlessly chase promotions and higher earnings, the question arises of how their mother gradually becomes marginalized, how her presence is reduced to that of an old piece of furniture, as if she has nothing left to give to the family and can be discarded at any moment into the rubbish heap. And yet, in reality, she is far from exhausted. She still has so much to offer to this household.
The fiercely career-driven, ambition-obsessed generation of today, intoxicated by desire, tries to forget its past, deny its greatness, and sever its roots. Thus, Shyamaprasad, also known as Shamu, who holds a high position in an American company, finds himself in deep trouble when he invites his American boss home for dinner. Where can he hide his uneducated, unsophisticated, rustic mother? Surprisingly, it is this very traditional, old-world mother who, through her simplicity, rural culture, and artistic skill, delights and deeply impresses the foreign gentleman. A single nakshi kantha, embroidered by her frail, trembling, ailing hands, helps Shamu win the battle for promotion.
The play ultimately raises a profound question: who is the true winner? This production unmistakably confronts today’s generation with that very question.
